"8 Minutes of Sun" was written in honour of British Columbia’s Defend Our Coast national day of action that took place on October 22, 2012 as a protest against proposed tanker traffic that would ship unrefined bitumen transported to the west coast via pipelines through pristine wilderness to Asian markets. The song questions the viability of billion dollar Big Oil subsidies, instead of sustainable solar power. It takes 8 minutes for sunlight to travel to earth, with enough energy hitting the earth’s surface in less than 1 hour to power the entire energy needs of the globe for one year. The solar power industry is a growth industry employing more Canadians than the shrinking, antiquated oil industry.
